RE: Case U-20763 - Reject the Oil Tunnel!
Dear Michigan Public Service Commissioners: I urge you to reject Enbridge Energy’s application to relocate its Line 5 pipeline and build an oil tunnel through the bottomlands of the Great Lakes. I thank you for your ruling to include climate evidence in this case. As the evidence in this case shows, the science is clear that to avoid significantly worsening impacts of climate change, we must rapidly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, including from the burning of fossil fuels. Allowing Enbridge to build this tunnel will exacerbate climate change, the impacts of which are already harming our state and its residents. It would contribute an additional 27 million metric tons of CO2e annually, a massive amount equal to 10 new coal plants, and result in an estimated $41 billion dollars in climate damages by 2070. Building an oil tunnel that would be permitted to operate for 99 more years would undermine our state’s efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050 as well as the hard work of achieving international climate goals. I ask that you protect our Great Lakes, our state, and our families from the worsening impacts of climate change by rejecting this application.
